James Hubbell

I had been sent to photograph the artist James Hubbell one afternoon while he was finishing a sculpture for a new library in San Diego.

I considered it a huge thrill to meet him, because ten years earlier I had taken a tour of his studio and home in Santa Ysabel, California, and was blown away and inspired by his work.

The first thing I noticed about the library jobsite was that very loud rock music was playing, and all of his young workers were grooving. Watching him work that day, and photographing him was a once in a lifetime experience...
